<![CDATA[Forever Kittens Cattery - Blog]]>Wed, 01 May 2024 09:05:28 -0400Weebly<![CDATA[Cat Diarrhea]]>Wed, 14 Sep 2016 09:34:50 GMThttp://foreverkittenscattery.com/catblog/cat-diarrheaWe don't like to talk about it, but it happens, cats sometimes get Diarrhea. The real question is, what to do about it?
Words like "Flagyle, worming, and Albon" are bandied about among breeders like it's the latest weather. But what if you have tried it all, and none of it has worked?
Are you supposed to suffer with a cat that has a drippy booty?
No, there are two products that I have found that work when all else fails. I think that products that work, are worth talking about. The first one is a product called Diar- eze.
I get the granules and just sprinkle them over food. It takes just a few days and kitty has no more problems. I use it for about a week to give the digestive system time to heal and relax before I stop using it. Sometimes, I will sprinkle on food once a week or once a month if I have a cat with IBS. (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) How often depends on how badly they have IBS. I have only had one cat with IBS (A sweet, Calico Persian) the long hair and IBS did NOT prove to be conducive to a clean cat. Diar-Eze was the only thing that actually worked. It took me long hours searching the internet and trying all manner of remedies before finding this one that worked. I was incredibly skeptical about it working at all..but at this point, anything was worth a try. It worked, it actually worked. I mixed it in with wet food first, however, after seeing the Diar-eze in action, I gained confidence in the product and began sprinkling it on the dry food once a month to make sure she stayed good.
You can find Diar-Eze here: http://www.allergicpet.com/products/diarrhea_formula.html

If Diar-eze works so well, why would I even talk about another product? As well as Diar-Eze works, it doesn't actually cure the problem if it is not IBS or something similar. What if it's something else? How can you tell? I think that IBS is sometimes mis-diagnosed, sometimes I think it's parasites that haven't been found in a fecal float. We all get our cats and kittens checked for parasites, it's part of the initial vet exam, and the final vet exam. Some times parasites just don't show up. So, what to do?
If the vet has suspicions, even if nothing has shown up in a fecal float, he or she may try the previously mentioned Flagyl or Albon. If those things don't work, I have another solution! It's a natural remedy called Kochi Free.
The trick to using this remedy (or any natural remedy) is to follow the directions. (duh right) but it will serve you to know that natural remedies normally have different directions than "normal" remedies. The directions for Kochi Free is 4 xs per day for 10 days. I know, I know, it makes me want to run and scream too. But it works, it really does. I have some more news...sometimes the first treatment doesn't work, and you have to take a 10 day break, and then do the treatment again for 10 more days. I know it's a huge inconvenience, but furry hiney and diarrhea don't mix. When the chips are down, and you are at your wits end, this is the thing to do. I use the Diar-Eze during the 10 day break and then stop it when I re-start the treatment. I do this because I don't want to be fooled into thinking all is well because the Diar-Eze fixes it, but doesn't actually cure the real issue (unless it's IBM or something similar) Kochi free can be found here:
wolfcreekranch.net/coccidia.html

As I have said before, some products are worth talking about...these are two of them.
I use these two as a final remedy. I usually try using pumpkin puree first. (no Libby's pumpkin pie filling with the yummy spices ~ the spices are not friendly to kitty tummies) only plain old, no frills prumpkin puree.

One final thought, if your kitty is having tummy troubles, there are several good foods to try. The trick to another food is this ~ don't give up! Your cat has to eat it for at least 6 weeks. I know that most people have heard about the slow integration bit, that lasts for about 2 weeks, those two weeks do not count in the 6 weeks total. The six weeks starts when you are fully feeding the new food. If you are seeing even a small improvement within the 6 weeks, keep going.

Every cat is different, some cats do great on one thing, while others do great on another. I like three different foods,
Purina gentle, Purina Pro Plan Focus sensitive skin and stomach (they offer lamb and rice and Herring -the fish- and rice) and finally Royal Canin Gastrointestinal High Energy for cats. (it has to be High Energy ~ even if your cat isn't)

I like to order all of my cat food online and have sent to my door because I am basically lazy and don't like Walmart lines...or..any lines really. I love knowing that my cat food is going to be on time, every time. I don't have to worry that I will ever run too low, or running out on an emergency food run in the middle of a snow storm. You can get all three from jet.com. It's an awesome site because they often offer free shipping and you get lots of discounts for different reasons...and mostly...they ship. You need to have a prescription for the Royal Canin because it's a veterinarian diet.
Okay, that's all ~ this has been a public service announcement!

<![CDATA[Comfort Cat Update!]]>Sat, 30 Jan 2016 10:39:41 GMThttp://foreverkittenscattery.com/catblog/comfort-cat-updateHighlander Kitten Comfort Cat

The emails I have received asking for updates on Comfort cat have been overwhelming. I am so proud to have such wonderful, warm, caring people out there interested in the goings-ons of Forever Kittens Cattery and it's inhabitants.

I know I have been remiss in keeping you all updated. Rather than send out a ton of personal responses to emails, I have finally made it back to the blog to give you all the long awaited update.

As I had predicted, comfort cat was perfectly fine and normal looking when he left for his new home. A tiny scratch among kittens playing rough and tumble with one another does happen from time to time. It has never been an issue, and I certainly did not expect it to be one this time.

Note that his eye is fine ~ though he didn't appreciate the bright lights.

~ What everyone really wants to know is...where did he go? What amazing family was able to adopt comfort cat?

Admittedly, I did have my ideas (again) about who should adopt comfort cat, I thought perhaps someone that had a struggle of their own that had worked through it would be a lovely match for comfort cat. The new person would hear comfort cats story, see that comfort cat is healed and feel as if they were "kindred spirits" of sorts.

~ Is that what happened? No. That is not what happened. We poured through the adoption applications, looking for just the right family (or special person) I, with my grand ideas, Comfort Cat with his wishes for a cuddle buddy...and after much discussion we settled upon a family with two wonderful children that would adore Comfort Cats amazing ability to know when it's okay to cuddle and when it's time to play. I was hesitant at first, still holding onto the idea that Comfort Cat should be with just the right family. Then it occurred to me...This IS the right family. These people are warm, and caring, and kind. After speaking with them several time over the phone and sending many texts and emails, I realized that "YES!" This is the perfect match! This is the family that will benefit the most from Comfort Cat, and that Comfort cat will benefit the most from.

There is a little girl out there right now cuddled down with comfort cat purring away on her lap and a proud Mom and Dad looking gazing upon the scene satisfied that they have a new heartbeat in their home that will bring them joy for many years to come.

That's what it's all about
The Rest of the Story ....The next burning question for everyone was ... "Did he get a name?!"

~ yes

His new name is "Briggs"

A very dignified, sturdy, and noble name for a very dignified, sturdy and noble cat!

The last photo is of Briggs in one of his favorite spots, cuddled up with a human in his new home.

<![CDATA[The Kitten Who Lost His Name]]>Sun, 13 Dec 2015 03:50:03 GMThttp://foreverkittenscattery.com/catblog/the-kitten-who-lost-his-namePicture
This story is about a kitten who was once named Zues. Zues is the son of our lovely Spooky and our Handsome Tonka.

Zues didn’t always have that name. (But more on that later) The name given to him by his mama was “Comfort.” You see, Zues was a comfort kitten. He did not use his big ol poly paws to swat his sister or brother, he did not use his big ol poly paws to grab his Mama’s tail. He planted his big ol poly paws on humoms legs each and every time she came into the room. When humom picked up the little wide-eyed kitten he would plant his big ol poly paws on her chest, look her square in the eye and say in his little kitten voice

“I am here for you, and I love you.”

Comfort cat wanted only to love others. His interest lay solely in the attention of humans.

Comfort cat was special, he played gently with his cunning brother, he out smarted his bully sister and he was always, always, the first one to greet humom when she came in the nursery to check on them. Comfort cat needed a special home. Comfort cat needed a home where he could comfort someone. Someone that needed him.

Female Highlander KittenSpectress, the bully
The first family to ask about him was turned down because they didn’t need him, they wanted a kitten that would rough house on the floor with the kids. Humom did look dubiously at his sister Spectress for a few moments…and then recommended another breeder that would have just such a kitten. Humom daydreamed about Zues joining a family that would need him, just as much as he needed a human to comfort. She pictured a small child in a wheel chair in which Comfort cat would sit upon the lap of the child throughout the day purring in sheer bliss. Humom imagined Comfort cat with an elderly woman that just wanted to watch a kitten play with the yarn and would watch t.v. with her. Humom imagined Comfort cat with a small child that was sickly and needed a friend, she envisioned little Comfort cat becoming the child’s constant companion, in the car, at home, on the way to the Doctor, there would be Comfort cat. Or maybe a rebellious teenager that wore black all the time, and felt very sad inside, and there…would be Comfort cat.

Hmm the possibilities were endless. The second family that called about Comfort cat was a top contender, they had a little girl who wanted more than anything to have a kitten for Christmas. They were a lovely family, but in the end…they didn’t need Comfort cat. Comfort cat had to go to a very special home.

Tiny Tim Via PinterestTiny Tim
Finally, the call came in, the call for Comfort cat, a young boy that had battled Leukemia wanted nothing less than a Mighty Highlander to call his own for Christmas! Oh Joy! This was the family for Comfort cat. The young boy promptly gave his kitten the Mighty name of “Zues!” aaah a wonderful name for a Comfort cat, strong, yet understanding. Yes, Zues was a good name and the deal was sealed!

Humom was quite pleased with herself for holding out for the perfect home for each of the kittens, especially Comfort cat ~ oops ~ I mean the Mighty Zues!

Zues loved his new role, he was anxiously awaiting the day he got to meet his own boy that would love him and he would be able to comfort the boy when needed. Zues was pleased.

Tragedy!

The bully Spectress swatted Zues right in the eye! Zues squinted, Zues meowed…Zues smacked her back! Spectress showed her remorse by attacking Lorenzo. Humom did the right thing and attended to the right eye of Zues immediately, administering a triple antibiotic ointment to his little eye. Looking, very, very closely, humom could see the two, very tiny scratches on the eye of Zues. Ah well, no matter, Zues snuggled down with his Mama Spooky, who licked his head, and Zues kicked his Sister, who meowed at him in complaint and Zues swatted Lorenzo who then jumped on his Sisters head. Yep, all is well in Highlander land.

Humom continued to administer the ointment to the eye of Zues, and took him to the Veterinarian for a checkup as well. The veterinarian peered closely at the eye of Zues (who purred up at her happily) and pronounced his eye as healing quite well. She even commented on his good behavior whilst she did her exam on him. Zues purred happily at the attention. Zues was happy to comfort the gentle vet and the smiling humom. He was so excited to meet his new boy!

Male highlander kittenZues at the Vet
Then there was the moment of the great tragedy, the tragedy when Zues, the Mighty, lost his name

….you see, when humom told the Mother of the boy about the eye of Zues, and sent a picture to show off to the Mother how very well the eye was healing and how very happy he was at the Veterinarians office…the Mother of the boy changed her mind. She said she no longer wanted Zues for her boy, not with an injured eye! Without a boy, the mighty Zues, no longer had his name, you see the name that comes from your special human is given to you straight from the heart. Zues could no longer be called Zues by a human that would no longer be his.

Male Highlander KittenComfort Cat Today
Thus, we now have Comfort cat, he is available to comfort the right person in the right home. He may grow up to have a tiny white spot in his eyes as a reminder of his lost name. The Veterinarian says that because he is so young, he may not ever have a tiny white spot. I think he will, I think Comfort cat will carry it with him to show the world that even though he does not look perfect on the outside, his inside is most beautiful thing about him. Comfort cat will await his new human and his new name with pride and with dignity. Just know that even if he does have a tiny white spot in his eye, he will still play fetch 2000 times with the little clothe mouse, he will still climb his way up to your lap when you are seated, he will still put his big ol polly paws on your chest, look you square in the eyes and say

“I am here for you, and I love you.”

<![CDATA[Accidental Snow Cat....]]>Mon, 02 Mar 2015 00:02:08 GMThttp://foreverkittenscattery.com/catblog/accidental-snow-cat
Persian Female
Pinky ~ the accidental snow kitty
This is "Pinky" she is a female Persian cat, here to be bred to Mooshie....we will get to that in a moment. Pinky has a great love of anything soft, warm and cushy ~ think laundry and pillows. No regular bed is soft and comfy enough for our darling Pinky. That being said, I would never guess she had a secret desire to go outside. We never let her outside unless it's in the cattio on a very nice day.

We don't consider mid-winter during great snow fall a "nice day." Apparently, Pinky begs to differ.

How this photo came to be...you see I needed to go outside and do horse chores. I suited up opened the door and this is what I saw. ^^ (See above) Yes, yes, I did laugh. There was ever patient, long suffering Pinky, sitting quietly at the door, waiting patiently for me to open it up and let her inside. She is so precious. It so happens that I had my camera nearby...I captured the Kodak moment on film.

The story of Pinky and her forced temporary marriage to Mooshie shall be coming in full detail in later days. Meanwhile, enjoy her great photo.

<![CDATA[Winnifred has a complaint....]]>Sun, 01 Mar 2015 23:51:54 GMThttp://foreverkittenscattery.com/catblog/winnifred-has-a-complaintSo it's all "Here Kitty Kitty, come over here sweeti" until a human is in the shower. Then, inexplicably, it's "Stop it! Don't jump in here! Get off of the curtain rod!"
What gives with that? I don't understand, are the humans the only ones entitled to unhindered water flow from above? Have they found the secret to catching it and they are unwilling to share? Are humans the only ones that are treated to honey, lavender, extract shampoo? I ask, because I am pretty sure my shampoo smells like citrus. I am a cat, have you ever heard of an orange loving cat? Even Mooshie doesn't like Oranges...though I believe he would love a bath in tomato juice.

Heaven forbid I clean my paws off in the fresh water bowl that humom sets down. I hear "Winni ~ stop splashing water all over the floor and making the water dirty with your paws!" Am I supposed to walk around with dirty paws then? That's the plan? I have dirty paws because Humom is too lazy to put out a fresh bowl of water. Really? How rude.

Furthermore, it has come to my attention that only the pregnant cats, and the cats with kittens get the Royal Canin canned cat food Everyday! Every single day! Seriously? I can't live on dry kibble and that cheap-o canned cat food from goodness only knows where once a week! I do my best to ask nicely, I wave my paw (the trick that always works for potato chips) I meow, I rub on the humans legs, I follow them as they walk towards the kitten nursery from which no plate has ever returned with food upon it! All to no avail !!

I also couldn't help but notice that my feather on a stick has not been replaced. Humom knows it's my favorite. Yes...I ATE it okay?! What else would any cat worth her salt do? I ate the feather on a stick....I stole it, I hid behind the chair, I ate it, and then I lovingly brought the remains to humom in order for her to realize that I required a new one. Where is it?!!

I give up, I may as well sleep with the dog!

<![CDATA[Update on my Adopted Cat]]>Sun, 01 Mar 2015 23:28:22 GMThttp://foreverkittenscattery.com/catblog/update-on-my-adopted-catToria did well outside visiting the other cats for the day...she is supposed to be a barn cat and all, so she was going to stay outside. That was cute, I love that I thought I was going to do that. She now is inside when she wants to be and outside when she wants to be. She is the most loving, sweet, kind, warm hearted kitty! Oh, and she has poly-toes...did I tell you that? Yep, she sure does. She is not super fond of other cats. So, when she gets sick of them, she just goes outside. She mostly hangs out in the barn. I think she and Donkey are big pals. Which is funny, because Donkey really chases the stray cat that comes to visit once in awhile.
Not to worry, Toria is spayed, so barn kittens here.
Below are some photos of Miss Toria inside.

<![CDATA[My New Adopted Cat]]>Sun, 18 Jan 2015 01:54:04 GMThttp://foreverkittenscattery.com/catblog/my-new-adopted-catMy friends mom "The Enabler" sent me a message on facebook about some pets in need (both of the Feline and Equine variety.) This is the story of the Feline sort ~ as is fitting for my cat blog:)
Polydactyl female Tortishell cat
Poly-footed, female, "Toria"
Whilst filling out my application to foster an Equine in need for the Hoosier Hooves and Hounds organization, I noticed there were also questions pertaining to other animals that need homes or fostering until a forever home can be found for them. I mentioned that I could take on an outdoor cat if needed for adoption. I really didn't think they would offer any cats to live outdoors.

Well, it turns out they had a barn cat in need of a home. She is blind in one eye, and evidently that made her difficult to adopt out. She has poly toes, and she is soo sweet. It really saddens me that no one wanted this baby. One of the requests of Hooves and Hounds is that if you adopt an outdoor cat, you need to keep it penned up in some manner for 2 weeks or so, in order for the cat to acclimate to his or her new surroundings and stay put. I decided to put her in one of our outdoor catteries with Elsa and Creamy.

Both Elsa and Creamy are very friendly to others and wouldn't mind the company. Elsa came right outside and said hello politely and Creamy didn't even bother to peek outside at all. To be honest, I was nervous at first about bringing in a strange cat. Most especially a strange cat from a shelter/rescue type situation. You know the stories...if you bring a cat in from any kind of rescue, they make all the breeding cats sick.
Highlander cat and friend
Queen Elsa says "hello" to her new friend "Toria"
Hoosier Hooves and Hounds is not a shelter, not a rescue...it's a hybrid organization. Hoosier Hooves and Hounds is officially a no kill shelter for animals of all kinds. This includes, ducks, chickens, pot-bellied pigs...whatever. They are foster based. This means that the pets that you adopt or foster from them have been in someone's home....usually the home of the president of the organization. This means that the animals are not in a crowded, normal, shelter situation. It's just like getting a pet from a well-known neighbor or friend. So, I felt much more comfortable taking a cat from Hoosier Hooves and Hounds.

I am so glad I did. I really love this cat already and I am happy to call her mine! Yes, she will probably be a barn cat at some point, but right now she is hanging with Elsa and Creamy, and when it gets cold she is coming inside with everyone else. I told Hoosier Hooves and Hounds to keep me in mind for other kitties that are hard to adopt, and I will be happy to help.

<![CDATA[Worthwhile Online Shopping]]>Mon, 29 Dec 2014 16:40:13 GMThttp://foreverkittenscattery.com/catblog/worthwhile-online-shoppingWe all know that anything and everything can be purchased on the net now days. I am a big fan of internet shopping. Sure, I have had the defective product from Amazon a time or two, but those are the risks you take even in the brick and mortar store, if you don't' take the thing out and test it right there. So far I have not encountered anything that can not be fixed one way or another.

One of my very favorite places to shop online is Petfooddirect.com. I get my cat and dog food delivered every month to my door.
I love it for so many reasons:

  • I don't have to drive (huge plus for me)
  • It's cheaper to have it delivered than it is to drive out and get it.
  • I never run out of food and have to scramble to get it before kitty /doggie breakfast in the morning.
  • As you use petfood direct, they give you "points"
~ A word about points - normally, I don't like the stupid "you get points/rewards/etc" from companies. That's because it's usually something like ~ you get 5% off of some item you would never use/ order anyway. It's useless. It clutters up my inbox with more crap that I don't want to see or care about. I get delete button cramps. Not so with petfooddirect.comreward points.

With Petfooddirect.com reward points you can put the points towards stuff you already get, to get an even bigger discount (hurray) OR you can use the points to donate to a shelter!! They donate food to a shelter (both dogs and cats) I love the idea that I am feeding my animals and by doing so, I am helping animals in need to eat as well. I don't even have to do anything other than what I am already doing. It couldn't be any easier. I really appreciate that they thought of that.

http://bit.ly/1HVYZfx

Yep, this was a shameless plug for one of my favorite companies. I think that people in general don't say enough good stuff about good companies any more. We can all read complaints by the dozens about any company. Finding a company that makes you happy is worth sharing. So, I decided to do.
In fact, I think I shall make a habit out of it! When I find a place I like, I shall post about it here. I can share the wealth, and hopefully others will benefit from it.

With that said ~ enjoy your day.

<![CDATA[The Cat Behind the Ball....]]>Wed, 06 Aug 2014 16:56:24 GMThttp://foreverkittenscattery.com/catblog/the-cat-behind-the-ballHighlander FemaleOur Resident "Spook"
It was a dark and gloomy day....I was doing dishes listening to the silence.

I distinctly heard a ball being dropped and rolling on the floor coming from upstairs. I told my self it was just a cat playing with a ball.
There are two problems behind this scenario, #1 I am not aware of any ball that we have that is upstairs. #2. Upon completion of the thought of it being a cat, I did a kitty head count. They were all present in the kitchen....presumably documenting my work for the day.

I shrugged it off and moved onto dusting. Again, with the ball upstairs while I dust. Alright....this time I see no cats present. Dusting is boring to cats.

I shrugged that off and moved onto sweeping and mopping. Cats love sweeping and mopping and all were in attendance. ....I hear THUNK....roll, roll, roll from upstairs. (At least it wasn't furniture being moved like in the books.) With a big sigh I lay down the broom ~ where it is promptly attacked by Mooshie. I slowly tread up the stairs. Yes, just like the idiots we yell at in the movies. I sneaked up my own staircase. I peered over the top of the landing. I hear nothing, I see nothing. (Of course not) This gives me the courage to move onward...Up the rest of the stairs. Thunk, roll, roll, roll....a ball rolls down the hallway towards me. A small, blue, plastic ball. I do not remember this ball at all. Seriously? Next the wall paper moves right? Do I turn around and go down the stairs? No, I stand there. I stand there looking at the ball and look at each closed door and wonder what is around the corner that is out of my site. I also do not step forward. I am internally debating going forward, or going back. Do I pick up the ball? Do I leave it there? If I roll it back and it comes back to me, what is my course of action? Do I play ball with the evil demon that apparently lives upstairs in my house? What I did do: I prayed of course. Then, I picked up the ball and rolled it back towards the end of the hall way, crouching down while I did so....nothing. The ball sat quietly against the wall it had hit. Sitting there...being a blue ball. I rolled my eyes and chastised myself for finding such a lame excuse to stop sweeping. I turn away from the ball to go back down the stairs I hear...skitter, skitter, roll, roll, roll. The ball hit the back of my foot, and in the shadows at the end of the hall I think I see a black shape. I do a quick cat inventory. White Mooshie is accounted for, sitting on the stairs nonchalantly, grey and white Pinky taking a bath at the bottom of the stair case. That leaves Spook...hmm, where is Spooky?
With a quick prayer, I again roll the ball, this time aiming for the shadowed corner. Skitter, skitter, shuffle, Pounce! Spook darts from the corner, expertly bats the ball in my direction, and quickly hides behind the corner again! Not a hair to be seen. I actually laughed out loud. Mystery solved.
After a few more rounds of skitter, pounce, hide, I went back to sweeping.

Highlander female cat
Spooky the big ham that enjoys a game of skitter, pounce, hide!
I know, I said all cats were in attendance earlier right? They were at the time of kitty head count. Perhaps the wind caught the light blue ball and it rolled in the wind, thus enticing Spook to go up and investigate the sound. Maybe when I did the head count she was there, but when I turned back to dishes she quietly went upstairs to play ball. Cats are sneaky, who knows how it happened. I just know that when I actually did investigate I found Spooky and the blue ball and I am leaving it at that!

Only two babies, one boy, one girl. I do believe this is the last of the evidence of Mooshies breeding spree.

I must admit these two are quite the little cuties and Winni seems to be very proud of her little fat babies.

The female is actually a dilute Calico, it's very difficult to capture the calico in the photos though. I imagine as she ages it will be come easier. You can see just a bit of the cream patches on her tail. They both have the doll faced Persian look.

Both of these kittens are are available for adoption!
While I was taking photos of the kittens, Winni enjoyed some free time. Winni knows that even when the kittens are little, if there are photos being taken, we MUST have the cat toy somewhere nearby....Of course Winni decided she couldn't just wait on us to get the toy out. She used the time we were distracted, to climb into our "Kitten photos prop box" and not only find the toy, but drag it out into the yard and proceeded to have a gay ol time with in. At one point, smugly prancing nearby dragging toy and stick glancing at us sideways to be certain we saw her great escape. Needless to say, we were cajoled into playing with her. I have included some pictures of the lovely (and very lively) Winni below.
